Día de los Muertos

Día de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, has fast become one of my favorite fall holidays. It is a multi-day celebration to honor loved ones that have passed on. It is celebrated on November 1 and 2. Loved ones are remembered and stories are told to keep their memory alive. Coco by Walt Disney Pictures, is a great story about this holiday. If you haven’t seen it, you are missing out. I cry every time I watch it. What a sweet story.

Typically, sugar skulls are used to decorate as are very vibrant colors and flowers. If you follow Mexican heritage, you will want to make an altar to honor the departed with pictures and memorabilia. I enjoy putting out pictures of my mom and sister that have passed away. In some ways I think they are looking down and smiling that we are celebrating them on a day other than their birthdays.

This year I will use my skull salad plates (found on Wayfair) stacked with black plates (found on clearance at At Home). For an accent, I am using my pink napkins from Amazon. The napkin will be tri-folded between the plates so you can see the design of the salad plate. In the center of the table, I am using a beaded sugar skull table runner (from Pier One). I have been collecting sugar skulls for a couple of years now. Each year they become more prominent/more available. A few other nick knacks and my table is complete.

I think I will add Halloween in with my Día de los Muertos decorations this year. Michael’s has a line of skeletons with pink roses this season that matches really well with sugar skulls (and matches my plates). Combining the two holidays takes a little pressure off for decorating. I don’t have children and I don’t have trick-or-treaters in my neighborhood so the decorations are for me and my childlike infatuation with life. I really enjoy changing my decorations for the different holidays.

It brings me so much joy to decorate our home. When I was young, my mom didn’t decorate so I don’t know where I got it from. I had to wait until I was grown to explore my passion. So, each year I add to my decorations and am zealous about decorating. I am fortunate we have the space (ha – my husband would disagree with this) to store the decorations when the holiday is over.

Only a few weeks until both Halloween and Día de los Muertos. I will keep adding to my decorations until the holidays but I hope you enjoyed my sneak peek.

Be the reason someone smiles today.
